Outnumbered 9-3

Os and some college friends went backpacking the other weekend and had an amazing time. Three of us wives decided to tackle the weekend together. The kids had a blast and we moms enjoyed scrapes of conversation. I love these moms and these kids. Three kids seems much larger when you multiple by three families -- we were a bit outnumbered.

Sun Valley, Idaho

I had the wonderful opportunity to join Os on one of his work trips a few weeks ago. Os was in Sun Valley, Idaho for a wine auction and I got to join in the fun. Just the plane flight was a treat. Drinking a latte and reading a book on the plane was a rare vacation, indeed.

This season of life doesn't allow Os and I as much one of one time as we would like, so we especially enjoy any chance we get. Sun Valley was beautiful and just being near the mountains tapped into my Rockies blood.

A Pie Party

Moose requested a pie instead of cake this year for his birthday, so we decided to give his party a pie theme.

The first game the boys were all chefs and had to protect their pie filling (balloon) from getting stomped by the other chefs. The chef with the last remaining pie filling was the winner.

My mom was in town and was very helpful on Jelly Bean duty. Jelly Bean is use to large boy shapes running past her, but the pie filling stomp game was a little much, even for her.

The next game was a pie eating contest. I'm glad the kids all enjoyed the games, because I found them highly amusing.

Not all the guests were keen on shoving their face into a pie, but the boys who did look pretty pleased with themselves. (I love how the three on the right are all still working on their pies even though the game is over.)

Finally we all tromped outside and threw whip cream pie at Os -- who was a great sport.

Moose selected apple pie and blueberry pie for his special day. Six candles! So exciting.

Camping Over the Fourth

We have a lovely time up at the French Meadows Reservoir near Tahoe over the Fourth of July. There has been so much rain this year that it was so green and the river was higher than it has been in the past. It was a great mix of food, friends, dirt and nature.

Uncle Drew joined us and brought up bread and cheese to go along with the wine (notice the mud pie in the foreground -- that was a nice addition, too.)

This boy LOVES bread and cheese. Offer him dessert and he'll be interested, but offer him bread and cheese and he is sure to clean his plate at dinner.

Our bathing beauty took to camping like a champ. I was concerned about keeping her warm enough in the tent, but she was snug as bug and slept great. She loved the dirt, the water and all the older kids to play with.

It is a great thing to have a foodie husband with foodie friends. These guys cooked up amazing meals (camping or no camping). We had paella one night, carne asada, homemade pancakes, grilled homemade pizza -- truly unbelievable. If I were in charge of the meals it would be burgers and dogs. I'm glad they love the cooking and take care of it all. One guy even brought up his machine that makes sparkling water. Hilarious.

Our friend, Jim, is always a entertaining the younger set. He is affectionately known as Uncle Jim by the kids.

Ah... a campfire. I could sit by a fire for hours. (And, yes, if you are wondering, one family brought all natural marshmallows and Ghirardelli chocolate for s'mores.)
