I read this good reminder on my friend, Connie's, blog:
If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator.
If I slave away in the kitchen baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.
If I work at the soup kitchens, carol in the nursing homes, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.
If I trim the tree with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties, and sing in the choir's cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.
Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.
Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return, but rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of love will endure.

Jelly Belly -- Two Weeks
Baby Jelly Belly is weighing in at 6 lbs. 9 oz. at the two week mark. She is eating and sleeping well (most nights) and that is about all you can ask of a newborn.
She doesn't seem to mind "tummy time". We all continue to marvel at how tiny she is. Below is a picture from her photo shoot with Os. We call it, "Just Barely Bigger Than Papa's Slipper".

I took a couple of pictures of Baby Jelly Belly this afternoon and our little peanut flipped herself from front to back. Our pedeatrictrian said little babies sometimes manage that acrobatic feat until their tummies get bigger. Here she is making her move.

The boys are still doing well during the adjustment. They get her pacifier or offer me advice about why she might be crying. Moose and BiggiE have been bickering among themselves more, but I'm thankful they don't seem to associate their frustration with the baby. BiggiE has yet to be photographed with her -- maybe he has his father's aversion to posed pictures. Below is Moose being a lovin' big brother.

Jelly Belly -- One Week
Our little girl is already one week old! My mom was here for the week and, unfortunately, had the stomach bug that has been going around almost the whole time. I tried to encourage her that I was still able to get more naps than I would have if she had not been here.

Moose is loving being the big brother again. The jury is still out for BiggiE. He is very sweet to his sister, but not interested in holding her yet.

I can't believe how tiny Jelly Belly is. I have long digits, but this is still a itty bitty foot.

I love watching Os with his daughter. A couple of times he has gotten choked up just being with her.

Baby Jelly Belly is Here!
Baby Jelly Belly was born Friday, December 5th at 7:00 AM. She weighed in at 6 lb. 8 oz. (2 lbs. less than her brothers!) and 19 inches long.
My water broke at 12:10 AM. We headed to the birthing center at 3:45 AM. And our little baby joined us by 7 AM. Now that's my kind of labor.
Her name is the French spelling of Christmas. If you need a hint, there is a carol "The First ______" and it is spelled with an -elle. Her middle name is my first name (a family name) and also the name of Isaac's wife in the Old Testament.
Now for a few pics:
Here we are moments after the birth. I transitioned so fast I never made it into the tub.
Taking a snooze at the birthing center.
Meeting her big brothers for the first time.
Os, Moose and BiggiE made Jelly Belly a birthday cake today to celebrate. (Look at all the pink in this picture. It is stretching me already! And "Princess" -- yikes. I am trying to be brave.)

Baby Come Out
I have tried to be coy about the actual due date of our little girl since both boys were eight days late. For those of you who are wondering, the doctor and ultrasound calculated date has come and gone. The first of December was the official day and it passed without much ado, except for the celebrating of Os's dad's birthday which he will not have to share with a granddaughter.
I am actually feeling quite serene. It is nice knowing the baby will be born some time in December. There is no more wondering if we will have a Thanksgiving baby, etc. I have hung my hat on December 9th. If that day passes (8 days -- like her brothers) without the arrival of this little one I won't be answering the phone.
Moose has written a song for baby Jelly Belly entitled, "Baby Come Out". He said he can't sing it now because it is for AFTER the baby is born. It sure seems to me that she could a little encouragement from those lyrics now.
Maybe hugs and kisses will work just as well.

Our First Christmas Tree
In keeping with a holiday season of firsts, Os and I went with the boys to get our first Christmas tree. We have been married nearly nine years and have never had a tree because we have always been in Colorado for Christmas. Not only was it our first Christmas tree as a family, but it is the first fresh tree I have ever had in my life. Ahh... smell that fresh noble pine...

Pregnant Cookies
I grew up going to my grandma's house in Kansas every Thanksgiving. Since I've been married we have traveled to St. Louis to be with Tyler's family for every Thanksgiving. This is the first year we will not travel to be with family and I have been feeling a bit nostalgic.
As a kid, my cousins, my brother and I would help my grandma make her famous "Filled Cookies". This is the first year I have tried to make them myself and I had some good help from BiggiE and Moose.
I felt like we were making a tribute to the pioneer days with this old fashioned grinder we used to chop up the raisins.
Here's a peek at the finished product. I took this plate of cookies to bible study and my friend, Sally, said, "Look, you made pregnant cookies -- just like you."
In case you're interested in the recipe:
Grandma's Filled Cookies
2/3 cup margarine
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp.vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
4 tsp. milk
Allow margarine to soften to room temp. thenbeat until creamy. Add sugar vanilla and beaten egg-mix well. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk. Mix well then chill for at least three hours or overnight (tightly covered)
Filling-
1 and 1/2 lb. raisins chopped in the food chopper. I don't know if blender or food processor would work. I have an old food grinder that your Dad gave me.
to the ground raisins add about 2/3 cup of water, mix until it is smooth then add 2 tbs flour to 1/2 cup sugar whichmhave been stirred together. (if you don't stir them together first lumps will form which you may not be able to eliminate). Cook over medium heat until bubbly and thickened, stirring constantly, ( that is important as they burn easily. If you feel them beginning to stck even a little, reduce the heat.) Remove from heat and cool. when cool, roll out a third or so of the dough to thickness of a nickel. Cut out with cookie cutter, place a dozen or so on greased cookie sheet one inch apart. Put half of a teaspoon of filling on each cookie, place another cookie on top of each one, flatten a little so that the edges of the top and bottom cookies are even and press each cookie around the edges to seal so that the filling does not run out. Bake in a 350 degree oven for approx. 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Then chow down- wait a bit for the cookie to cool as the filling gets very hot.

Grandma's Letter -- Part II
One thing I have always admired about my Grandma is that she is a learner. Being in her 80s has not changed her love of life and desire to grow. I found this excerpt of her recent letter inspiring:
"I am well physically and to my amazement spiritually, I am growing. I thought that when I got to this age I could just coast on in without any effort. Wrong! There is always room for improvement and still work to do.
Yes the work is changed to fit the body with less energy, fewer teeth, deafer ears, blinder eyes and aching joints. It's so easy to let the clay get too hard to mold by just sitting on the wheel and not allowing the potter to re-form."
I pray that I can be like her 50 years from now.

A Moose or a Squirrel?
It is still Fall here in Northern California. The leaves are changing and scattering across the roadways. The boys and I enjoy walking around the neighborhood across from our house and there are plenty of leaves to collect or crunch. The main objective seems to be collecting acorns. Every time we return from a walk they unload their stash of nuts like little squirrels.
I have been consistent about requiring the acorns to remain outside. In fact, we have a small box halfway full of nuts on the back porch. (There are either going to be some starving squirrels in the neighborhood this winter or they are all going to move to our backyard.) When we came home from our last walk I was distracted by my desire to warm up with some hot chocolate and forgot to have the boys take their cache outside. Later that evening I noticed a sprawl of acorns across the living room. "Boys, you need to do something about these acorns, " I admonished.
The next morning I grabbed a travel mug for my tea and this is what I found:

I guess Moose is more a squirrel than I thought.

Grandma's Letter -- Part I
I received a wonderful letter from my Grandma the other day. There is something special about a handwritten letter on flowery stationary. It felt like a warm hug from one of my favorite people. Below is an excerpt:
"You may not remember about my regard for cats. They have never been a favorite. At every opportunity I have thrown stones at them or scared them away by some other method, until now there is only one which insists that around this house is definitely the choicest place in town.
In spite of the occasional rock pitched in his/her direction, no food and no other signs of welcome, he/she has refused to abandon the area. Even if I am only watching him/her from the picture window in the kitchen, if he/she sees me, he/she looks straight at me and meows as if to say, 'Well, have you changed our mind about me yet?'
After watching this creature for a couple of years I have come to the conclusion that he/she is really sort of cute. Entertaining that thought was a big mistake. Seeing the poor thing shivering from cold or bedraggled by rain, has warmed the cockles of my hard heart. The heart-softening began by giving it a name and on occasion talking to it. It is a pretty soft gray and has a crooked tail. I should have named it Ziggy or something like that. But no, it was just referred to as 'Gray'.
As time went by I began to feel that is should have a more sophisticated name, since having been so persistent. So I have changed the name to 'Grigio'. Isn't that classy? Well not as much as you might think because it means gray in Italian.
The next step is putting out a little food, only table scraps, no boughten food absolutely!
Even old people can change and that is good."

Getting Crafty
Inspired by my crafty friend, Michelle and specifically her crafty friend, Amy, I got a jump on Christmas presents by making these hats for my nieces and nephew. They were the perfect knitting project for this beginner because hats are super easy to knit and hats that are all the same color, well, you could nearly do it with your eyes closed. (Well, not me, but I can imagine a more seasoned knitter clicking away without looking.)

The boys were happy to model for me and shouted "Merry Christmas!!" at the top of their lungs. With baby Jelly Belly set to arrive in the next several weeks I am so happy to have my Christmas gifts wrapped and (almost) sent.

Pregnancy Update
I just got home from a visit with the midwives. The midwife I saw today, Chris, said this baby does not seem like an 8 lb. baby (both boys were 8 lb. 8 oz.) I'm hopeful that might mean an easier delivery. Chris wants me to have an ultrasound tomorrow and a non-stress test because I am measuring small and they just want to confirm everything is okay.
I feel melancholy. I think it is nearing the end of pregnancy and feeling unwieldy and tired. One of the boys was just terrible at the appointment with the midwife. When we got back to the car I cried for a good five minutes because of hormones and tiredness and embarrassment. My thoughts were along the lines of, " Why are we having another kid?"
I know it will all pass and the sun will shine again, but I just wanted to be real about life here at Youwithus.

Date Night
Tyler and I were so excited to have a night away before Baby Jelly Belly is born. One of our favorite bands was performing at a club in San Francisco and it seemed the perfect excuse. Our good friends, Trevor and Kristina, stayed at our house and the boys were so excited that we could hardly get them to say goodbye to us.
It was so fun seeing Danielson Familie live. We got a lot of startled looks and congratulations with my 9-month pregnant belly hanging out. I got to pretend to be a groupie. I felt like a celebrity chaser noticing different artists at the club that I had listened to, but never seen live. My favorite musician right now is Half-Handed Cloud and he was there with his girlfriend. During the second band, Cryptacize, Half-Handed Cloud guy was standing right behind me and I just couldn't resist turning around to introduce myself. (His real name is John, by the way, his parents didn't give him the Native American sounding name of the band.)

Tyler was actually really sick, but insisted we follow through on the plans. He said if he was going to go to work sick and call himself a family man he needed to keep the plans we had had as a couple. I love him for that and it was actually really romantic popping around to the funky indie music.
One exciting aspect of the trip was that the hotel valet lost our car keys. We left them at the front desk with the clerk and no one seems to know what happened after that. We were just glad our car wasn't stolen, but it definitely rearranged our Saturday plans. Our friend, Trevor, drove the hour and half to the city to bring us our extra set of keys. The hotel guys were falling all over themselves with apologies and compensations and said they were super grateful we didn't get angry and remained so calm.
I've always wanted to have a daughter who played the bass, so I'm hoping Jelly Belly's in utero experience might influence her to fulfill my dreams.:)

Fun with Grandpa
My dad was in town to help out for a week and we had a great visit.
It rained almost the entire time my dad was here. This is the outfit he rigged up to go outside and trim the grapes on our pergola. I am so glad not to have old, shriveled grapes falling all over the patio anymore.
It's up for debate who had the most fun with the games. The boys played marble tower, read books, ran around being jets, etc. My dad can play for hours and is great at coming up with new games. He took the long, clear box my new curtain rod came in and rigged up a racing tube for the hot wheels. My dad and BiggiE spent at least an hour racing cars that first day.
The only real outing we took was up to visit Tyler's work and visit the redwoods. I love watching kids run around enjoying a forest. And the puddles, it is so nice to have a chance to do some puddle stomping. (Remind me I said that in a month or two when I am sick of the rain.)

Happy Harvest!
I decided to post our holiday letter for posterity. If you've already read it, I apologize. Please feel free to move on.
Incidentally, this photo session with the pumpkins was a great exercise in my letting go of expectations. I knew going into it that BiggiE would most likely decline to wear his pumpkin helmet. "I don't want to be a pumpkin monster" was his reasoning.
What I didn't expect is that I would be the limiting factor. Yes, it was awkward having my large tummy painted (though great for hiding stretch marks), but what really made me urge our photographer (Tyler's mom) to hurry is that my pumpkin had started to rot and stinky pumpkin juice was oozing onto my head and shoulders. (You can even see some of the drips in the photo.) Ew!

Greetings!
In anticipation of our new little girl arriving sometime the beginning of December we decided to send out a Happy Harvest in lieu of a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.
The big news on Tyler’s job front is that he is now the head winemaker at Pax Wine Cellars in Santa Rosa. The focus is on Rhone varietals, particularly Syrah. Tyler jumped into his new role right before harvest began and has been very busy, but very happy. As his wife, it is wonderful for me to see him excelling in a job that really uses his skills and abilities. In the midst of the pressure he has been able to keep a broad perspective and realize he is making wine, not doing brain surgery. Get more info at www.paxwines.com
In addition to spending most of 2008 growing another human being in my womb (not that I personally have much to do with beyond the milkshakes and naps), I have started swimming again. Being back in the pool again is fulfilling on many levels and I am hoping to compete in the race from Alcatraz to San Francisco next summer.
As a family, we wracked up the frequent flyer miles with trips to Mexico to be with my family and to Nags Head, NC to be with Tyler’s. We feel fortunate to be able to spend time with our wonderful families in such beautiful places. We managed to fit in a few camping trips this year and judging by the boys’ enthusiasm we won’t have to twist their arms to go next year. Tyler has also taken the boys to the climbing gym a couple of times. It is a treat to be able to enjoy activities we love with the boys as they get older.
Speaking of the boys, both Moose and BiggiE are still enthralled with all vehicles and animals. They were thrilled to get to be co-pilots for their Grandpere this September when we were in St. Louis. Moose is super excited to meet his baby sister and BiggiE is warming up to the idea. They have christened her “Baby Jelly Belly”.
Mr. Oscars
Moose has started preschool three days a week and has enjoyed learning and making new friends. One of the first units they did was on the rainforest which is perfect for Moose since he thinks he is Go Diego Go. Moose likes to know the specific name for animals, i.e. not a bird, but a scarlet macaw. His favorite animals right now are sharks and snakes. (You know how I love that! Nothing like a few trips through the snake house at the zoo to help you face a phobia.)
Since Moose turned four in August I have been referring to him as Mr. Oscars. The child has a battering ram for head and has always taken hard falls with barely a peep. Now the slightest graze requires the ice pack and band-aid he once shunned, followed by a call to 911. I’m convinced he has a bright future as a Latin American soccer player.
Mr. Opposite
BiggiE is often content to go along with the imaginary games of his brother, usually with a race car clutched in each hand, but when he tires lava snakes and construction sites he will happily play his own game. We appreciate his independent spirit and the way he makes us all laugh. He has always been very verbal and it can be entertaining see how he thinks about life. The other day Tyler casually asked him when he thought he would start doing his business in the toilet. BiggiE matter-of-factly replied, “Wednesday.”
Being two-and-a-half, BiggiE has put his own spin on the “No!” of which his age group is so fond. He consistently says the opposite of whatever has just been said by someone else (hence his current nickname). I was explaining to the boys that as hard as it is to believe “Mama doesn’t know everything…” Cue BiggiE, “Yes, you DO know everything.” Why, thank you, I hadn’t realized how I could work this whole stage in my favor.
We are so thankful for you, our friends and family, and we look forward to hearing updates on all that is going on in your world. To enjoy more pictures and stories of our family see our blog: www.youwithus.blogspot.com Have a blessed holiday season!
God’s love, joy and peace,

Pumpkin Patch
I love Fall! Warm drinks, baked goods and chilly weather. (Well, not really chilly because of the 30 degree swing we have been having each day -- 50s in the morning and then 80 by the afternoon.)
I have been so in love with my two-year-old which is a treat since his two-year-old-ness can make me forget my infatuation several times a day. We went to a pumpkin patch yesterday with our good friends, Alison and Judah. On the way there, BiggiE was in hysterics, basically because the sky is blue. Everything he could think of was wrong (boy, I've had that feeling sometimes in my hormonal state) from the toy car he brought to the fact the we were not going to the right pumpkin patch, oh, and he was wearing shoes. Tough stuff.
In typical BiggiE form, he had his 20 minute cry and then all was right in the world again. He had so much fun running around among the hay and pumpkins and farm animals with his best buddy. And I was free to once again savor my affection for my little guy who will soon be a big brother.

A Girl Shower
Kelli, Alison and Pam put on a wonderful "Girl" shower while my mom was in town. Girl clothes are definitely fun, though I have to say I had to fight off a panic attack when I open the first pair of little girl shoes. I don't know if it was because having a girl felt so real and overwhelming or if it was just having a third baby felt suddenly overwhelming.
My first thought when I saw this photo is how much I look like my mom. Standing behind my mom and me are Alison, Amanda, Kelli, Stacy, Catherine, Tenney, Pam and Maribeth.
My mom gave me some of my old clothes and it was a very special gift.

I love this time lapse belly photo. Kelli due in April, Amanda due in February and me due in December.

Friends and Family
We have so many people in St. Louis that we love. The boys and I were able to hang out with Barb and her great kids. This was before Cora was born and somehow I didn't get a picture of our pregnant bellies together. (Perhaps it was enough to carry on a conversation while monitoring 5 boys.) I always leave Barb and Andy's wishing I was always just a ten minute drive away.

We also had dinner at my Aunt Kathy's. My Uncle Ed and Aunt Cindy just moved to St. Louis is summer and it was nice to see them since it had been two years. Moose adored Alexis, my cousin Naomi's daughter and BiggiE and Deja tolerated each other. Two-year-olds crack me up because they often seem like they are not sure if the fun of a playmate is worth sharing of the toys.
